If we only had a car!

I know we left our car here somewhere!

Winter Weight?

“I plowed this forenoon up south.  After dinner I went over to help raise the house barn for Wm H Harris.  Cloudy and cool but no rain.”

It's early spring and Fredrick realizes that he still needs to shed his winter weight.

Does your town look like this?

“Continued plowing about four acres up south on sod for barley. Plowed all day.  A little wet.  Pleasant day.  Sowed some early peas in the garden at noon.”

This is what it looks like here with all the rain we have been having!

Corn Stubble!

“Started the plow on the corn stubble today.  Some of it plows very good but some of it is to wet.  Commenced raining a little this morning but cleared off and the afternoon was very pleasant thought very windy.”

Our girl practicing for the LPGA?

A nice cold one!

“I finished sowing clover seed this forenoon.  Drew out manure this afternoon.  Has been a fine day.”

After a hard day of sowing clover and drawing manure, there is nothing better than a nice cold one!

Propping up Baby.

“Drew Stones and finished the wall under the tool house today and drew two loads of small ones to fill up with.  Planted some early potatoes in the east garden this afternoon.  Has been a pleasant day.”

I love this picture.  Because pictures were so expensive, most pictures were not taken unless everything was perfect.  The fact that this baby is being propped up by someone makes this picture very rare.

Happy Easter!

“I helped Will Holmes butcher balance of their pigs this morning (three) then fixed some wire fence by the berry bushes.  Helped Pat Wallace draw some manure on his garden this afternoon and then plowed our east garden.  Has been a very fine day.”

Too Wet To Draw Manure?

“I cultivated the west yard over this morning and drew out two loads of manure.  The ground is to wet draw manure.  Went to O L Thruing Sale this afternoon”

You can either title this picture: "The Morning After" or "Sure, I Have A Hold Of You"

Large Stones!

“Drew large stones for wall under the tool house.  The ground is very wet.”

Another cool street scene from the early 1900s.

Butchering Pigs

“Helped Will Holmes butcher three pigs this morning.  Got done about half past nine and I went up town with milk.  Continued raining about about 8 o’clock and rained all the forenoon and two or three showers this afternoon.”

I just thought that this was a cool picture of a store.

Drawing manure all day makes for a fine day! Really?

“Drew manure all day.  Very fine day.”

This little girl has just been told that she is going to be drawing manure all day.

Another eventful day!

“Picked up our potatoes this forenoon. Drew them up to Geo Lowe after dinner had 26 bu & 28#.  When I got home I drew a load of manure on the east garden and on up south.   Very pleasant day.  Snow is all gone."

I am sure these were lovely girls and that this picture was treasured.  However, I find it kind of creepy.  It reminds me of the book "The Shinning" by Steven King.

Four Pigs, a Funeral and a Bushel of Potatoes

“Helped Will Holmes butcher four pigs this forenoon.  Went to the funeral at C.H. Thomas’ at two o’clock and came home by town and sold our potatoes to Geo Lowe at .60¢ Per bu.  Warm and pleasant day and the snow is going very fast.”

I put this picture in because of the little stand that this woman is leaning against.  It is very similar to one that I have.  It must have been a common piece back then.

Hey! That horse looks like a goat.

“I went to town with the milk this morning.  This afternoon I went to the auction @ John Champions.  Snowed until nearly noon today and the snow is nearly 9 or 10 inches deep.”

Since our girl is having all that snow, I thought that this picture would be appropriate.

Drawing Manure!

“I drew manure this forenoon.  It commenced raining about 11 o’clock and about noon turned to snow and has snowed all the afternoon and the snow tonight is two or three inches deep.  Clarence Bryant came and got the calf about 4 o’clock.  It weighed 204 #
                                                                                              5 ½ c
                                                                                            $ 11.22”

Scary Dolls!

“Drew out manure this forenoon.  After dinner Rogers came down and we hitched up and drove to the corner south of Asbury, Thence east to the next corner, North to the main road and home.  The colt goes very good indeed.  Has been a very windy day but clear and warm.”

A little girl in her room.  It looks like a pretty nice room.  The dolls are pretty scary though!

65 Stakes

“Split out about 65 stakes this morning and then we went to work at a piece of fence north of the barn yard and built it.  The day has been very windy and rains a little tonight.”

Is that a child the women is holding or a doll?  The man seems to be holding the dog with more affection!

Sowing Clover!

“I finished splitting the wood this forenoon and sowed the clover seed on the south wheat lot as far north as the dead furrow north of the gravel pit this afternoon.  Also sowed nearly 1/3 of the middle lot.  Has been a very pleasant day.”

It is good to see that some things have not changed!

Very Good Indeed!

“Split wood this forenoon.  Oliver came down after dinner and we hitched up the colt and drove him to Caledonia and Mumford with the Chestnut mare and he went very good indeed.  Has been somewhat cloudy all day but no rain.”

A Sunday family picture.  Notice the hair style of the girl in the top left.

Quit Clowning Around!

Once again, Victorian.  But it is such a great picture that I just had to put it up.

A cow on the roof?

“We finished sawing wood this forenoon.  Have 4 or 5 cords to split.  Rogers came down after dinner and we hitched up the colt and drove him down to Stone Church.  Dwight and wife spent the afternoon here.  Has been pleasant most of the day but very windy.”

Now, what seems a little strange about this picture?

What is a beetle? Not a bug!

“Rained very hard this morning from about 6 0”clock until about 9.  Has not rained much since that time.  I went up town this forenoon to do some errands.  This afternoon I made a beetle and we finish sawing the big wood except two or three logs”

Households had different beaters, paddles, and bats - some of them known as beetles - for purposes from tenderising meat to working butter to beating the dirt out of clothes.

April Snows Bring May Woes!

“This morning I took the old sow to J. E. Hazleton’s and got home about 11 o’clock.  We cut wood until about two when Rogers came and we hitched up the colt and drove him down east below Lime Rock and back on the main road.  Snowed about 1&1/2 to 2 inches during the night and the day has been quite raw and cool but bright.”

A Tea Party!

“I went up town this forenoon and got the Bay horse shod and got some lumber and 300# middlings.  After dinner we hitched up the colt again and gave him another drive on the lumber wagon.  Pleasant but somewhat chilly day.”

Nothing better than a tea party on a nice spring day!

Little Rascals

“We cut wood this forenoon.  About 2 o’clock Rogers came down and we hitched the colt on the lumber wagon and drove him around the square by Will Martins.  Very windy day.”

I know that this is not a Victorian picture, but this boy reminded me of the "Little Rascals"
